Lake Monroe Water Fund Mission
The Lake Monroe Water Fund is an active funder for watershed projects that conserve, protect and sustain Lake Monroe as our shared community water resource.
The goal of a Water Fund is to contribute to water security through nature-based solutions that serve the entire community. Read More…
Lake Monroe, also known as Lake Monroe Reservoir is the sole water source for Monroe and several surrounding counties serving over 128,000 customers annually. Lake Monroe Reservoir became operational in 1965 when other water sources (University Lake, Griffy Reservoir and Lake Lemon) ran out – threatening the local population, the economy and the potential loss of Indiana University.
Lake Monroe Reservoir was built for flood control and as a 100 year water source, however, in 2015 we celebrated its 50 year anniversary. Now is the time to develop an ongoing funding vehicle for remediation projects, initiating BMP practices, implementing the Watershed Management Plan, and long term sustainability programs and protections to extend the life of Lake Monroe as our sole water source and to maintain it as key to our regional economy.
